Discover LA by Metro:
Family Fun, Date Night, Noon Break — Time for Festive Mood at Pershing Square off Red/Purple Lines
If you’re like everyone else during holiday season, you need a break from too much eating, shopping, and general stress. When the kids start getting restless or you just can’t stand one more crowded mall, hop on the Metro for a once-a-year winter wonderland break at holiday on ice .
Many free festive events and holiday-themed concerts are offered in addition to the skating, through January 16, 2012. Downtown On Ice, in its 14th season, is at the Outdoor Holiday Skating Rink in Pershing Square, 532 South Olive, across the street from the Pershing Square stop on the Red/Purple Lines.
For a weekday break, there are free Wednesday lunchtime concerts, December 19 to January 6 from noon to 2 p.m., including a variety of fun family-friendly music — country, folk, rock, disco, and, of course, holiday music.
You can also pick up some healthy treats and unique items at the weekly Wednesday Pershing Square Farmers’ Market. The market offers a variety of fruits, vegetables, arts, crafts, and fun seasonal gifts. The market is located in the fountain area south of the skating rink.
On Saturday, December 10, 2011, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Pershing Square will be transformed into a winter wonderland for the Winter Holiday Festival. Most events are free, including tons of snow, Santa and his reindeer, “make & take” children’s crafts, community youth performances, a miniature train village, puppet shows, photo mementos, and live concerts.
A 12 Nights of Christmas celebration runs from December 12 to 23, 2011, featuring nightly concerts from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The celebration includes events for Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas.
We love the urban atmosphere of Downtown On Ice in Pershing Square. The venue is steeped in LA ambiance — the rink is ringed by palm trees; the downtown skyline is the backdrop; participants of all ages and backgrounds laugh together as they slip and slide; and multicultural food aromas, languages, and music fill the air. For more photos of the festive ambiance see our previous post.
