Little Tokyo/Downtown Los Angeles Farmers’ Market (Thursdays, 10 am – 2 pm):

An al Fresco Lunch Destination with Something for Every Taste

You can’t find a more quintessential Downtown Los Angeles location for a delightful food experience than the Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers’ Market, with the iconic City Hall as its backdrop.  This market, on the South Lawn of Los Angeles City Hall on First Street between Main and Spring Streets, is a great place for a workday break with an al fresco lunch.

Executives and workers enjoy lunch from vendors

Prepared food is a big feature for lunch goers at the Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers' Market.

The Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers’ Market is large, with more than 60 vendors featuring prepared food, fresh produce, baked good, live and cut flowers, and clothing and craft items.

Cooked food vendors outnumber all others, making this market a great lunch hour feast.

Lunch on Lawn

Colorful banners give the South Lawn of Los Angeles City Hall a picnic atmosphere for lunching at the Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers’ Market.

A neighbor who works near City Hall told us that his wife and children often take the Gold Line to meet him at this market for lunch on summer days – how idyllically urbane.

You’ll find almost any type of food that you might fancy, with plenty of samples handed out.

We loved the flan from Flan King. (You can tell we believe in eating dessert first!)

We were seduced by sweet potato cobbler from Cobbler Mania.  A cobbler split between us comprised lunch! A peach cobbler went home to Mom. Don’t miss the offerings by baker/owner Shae Seward.

Peach is one of the flavors offered by Cobbler Mania.

Nuts and Snacks

Nuts and dried snacks offer shoppers interesting variety .

We  sampled many of the selections of dried fruits and nuts from Alex’s and found then very tempting. Next visit we’ll take some home.

The aromas at this market are sure to make you hungry, so eat first before doing your produce/grocery shopping – then take home some tempting treats!

Fresh Strawberries are among the offerings

All produce at the Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers' Market is organic.

Orchid Plants

Live orchid plants, a good addition to the office or home, attract shoppers at the Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers' Market.

Plants and flowers were well priced. Orchid plants at one vendor would beautifully complement office or home – we saw one of these orchids peeking out of another passenger’s bag on our Gold Line ride home.

Beautiful selections of  fresh flowers are also available, and the prices seem comparable or less than those at supermarkets.  The cheerful floral displays give the street corners a European flavor.

Bunches of fresh flowers for sale

Fresh flowers for sale are a bright spot at the Little Tokyo/Downtown Farmers' Market.

This market is a wonderful lunch time excursion. We hope to see you there!

  1. Ditto Bruce. Good fotos, good food, and a nice train ride should mean a good and helpful blog.

I don’t like even to drive on FW’s. So I need to ride my bike and train much more often.

  2. Bruce says:

Superb photos and great reporting. Keep ’em coming. These make mass transit riding so much more enjoyable.
